Benjamin Netanyahu’s Government has approved the establishment of the ”National Guard for Israel” a government police force subordinate to the ministry of national security.

The prime minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, established the National Guard, which will “serve as a dedicated force qualified and trained to handle, among other things, various emergency situations, nationalist crime and terrorism.”

Palestinians, Israeli opposition, and also human rights centers declare the new government police force as a “private militia” in Ben-Gvir’s hands.

Itamar called the establishment of the government police force “important news for Israeli citizens and will improve personal security.” Several public figures, however, criticized the initiative, such as the State Attorney General’s Office, which spoke of a legal impediment due to overlapping duties with the police.

The executive thus approved funding of one billion shekels, about 250 million euros, for the National Guard. Some 2,000 military personnel are expected to be involved, according to local media.

The current Israeli government is composed of the most unbalanced coalition to the right in the country’s history.
